protesters seeking to oust the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi ignored the repression and went on Thursday to the streets in four cities in what activists characterized as a''day of rage'' . Meanwhile, rumors that circulated at least 14 protesters died in clashes with pro-government forces.
The organization Human Rights Watch based in New York, said the internal security forces also arrested at least 14 people. Hundreds of pro-government protesters marched through the capital, Tripoli, where they blocked traffic in some places, witnesses said.
A Web site of the opposition and an opposition activist said the incidents occurred during demonstrations in four cities on Thursday. The organizers used space on the network, like Facebook and Twitter, to call national demonstrations.
Today the Libyans''broke the barrier of fear,''said Faiz Jibril, an opposition leader in exile.
Gaddafi's government moved quickly to try to stop the Libyans to join the wave of uprisings in the region that have ousted the leaders of Egypt and Tunisia. Proposed to double the salaries of public employees and released 110 suspected Islamic militants on opposition tactics similar to those adopted by other Arab regimes face massive protests.
